📺 Loved this exemplar possession from yesterday’s @eybl_ce game. In a 1 vs 4 situation, @stepan_zelenkov uses two excellent wall-ups to get the stop. The next sequence is equally impressive with great PVAD on display to quickly scan and make the kick-ahead pass to @santoos3.7.

🗣As coaches, the cueing we use is critical. Many basketball and strength & conditioning coaches use internal feedback, which is when the feedback relates to specific body parts. Eg “put your hands here, feet in this position etc.”

🔬The science tells us that any internal feedback referring to body parts can be detrimental to performance. In light of the science, 95% of the feedback coaches use is internalized. The pioneering research done by Dr Gabriele Wulf should shape the way coaches teach.

🔍Wulf’s work highlighted how an internal focus on body movements leads to players’ consciously trying to control their movements. This leads to constraining elements of a player’s motor system, resulting in superfluous contractions in other muscles as well. This disrupts the fluidity of the movement, leading to energy being expended and accuracy of movements are subsequently degraded. Internal feedback can also overload a player’s working memory.

🗼The solution lies in giving feedback based on external cues. “The performer’s attention is directed to the effect of the action” (Wulf, 2007). Instead of instructing players to put their arms above their head, jumping in a straight line, for wall-ups my cueing is to be “straight like a skyscraper”. We want to avoid a Leaning Tower of Pisa situation and Stepan exhibits this perfectly!

🏀Instead of putting players through a scripted

🏀Instead of putting players through a scripted routine of pre-determined 1 on 0 techniques, literally just play defense to improve the effectiveness of individual workouts. Use varying starts, always in a new location, with specific constraints on the offense (eg only threes).

⏱When planning I avoid going through a list of specific techniques (aka “moves”) I want to impart on the player as the “correct” way of doing something. Instead I look at what the player specifically needs as well as giving giving them an input in the workout. I then play “guided defense” most of the time, using my positioning to replicate situations used by real defenders in-game.

I believe many coaches mistake 🏀 for Pokémon - “Gotta catch ‘em all.” Basketball is nothing like this. Players do not need all these moves on moves on moves. One solution which they can adapt an endless variety of ways is far more effective.

🔜 Soon it will get to a point with this player where a change in individual constraints will make this type of practice less effective. With @linus.holmstrom being 6ft 3, I am the same height and can (just about!) move well enough to replicate defenders at a decent EU youth level.

🏋️‍♂️ Linus is 16 though. He will continue to grow and also as he develops his body through strength training (while mine declines through aging!), there will be a time soon where my defense is not challenging enough. I can change task constraints but a better def is the best solution. This is why I do not think current trends in the NBA and other pro leagues with players playing against coaches is task representative. It’s the same in the NCAA vs student managers.

Playing against other players is the best solution, and designing the workout so players interact with as many different players as possible is key (respecting the role of individual constraints).

🗣In the context of sport, numerous research studies have shown that coach behaviours have important motivational implications for their athletes (Amorose & Anderson-Butcher, 2007). The main problem in our sport is that the behavior of many basketball coaches does not foster this growth.

📚According to self-determination theory, people need to feel the following in order to achieve psychological growth (Deci & Ryan, 2002):

▪️ Autonomy - people feeling in control of their own behaviors and goals. Being able to take action knowing it will result in change.
▪️ Competency - When people feel that they have the skills needed for success, they are more likely to take actions that will help them achieve their goals.
▪️ Connection - People need to experience a sense of belonging and attachment to the others.

👂Autonomy-supportive environments are characterised by a coach who acknowledges the feelings and perspectives of their players and provides opportunities for these to be heard and acted upon in practice (such as in this “de-brief” example shown here).

😡In contrast to autonomy-supportive behaviours, a coach that acts with the use of pressure, coercive demands, and offers rewards to direct a person’s behaviour is said to be controlling (Bartholomew et al., 2009). This is characterized by controlling feedback, excessive personal control, intimidation behaviours and promoting ego-involvement. This type of coach is unfortunately all too common in 🏀.

🔬Blanchard et al., (2009) reported that the actions of coaches with a controlling orientation can result in reduced athlete autonomous motivation, and likely thwart their effort and persistence. In light of the evidence, it’s important as a coaching community that we change our perceptions of “quality coaching.” Players of all levels deserve better.

📧 Had a lot of messages recently from coaches asking about the differential learning concepts I have been trying out. Had SO much fun working on applying these to different situations. I will attempt to cover what it is in this post.

🔬 The idea originates from Wolfgang Schollhorn et al., in 2006. The concept is that practicing a variety of movements in a random manner facilitates the development of movement patterns that can be adapted to novel situations.

💡Training this way we consider movement variations as being the basis of learning rather than using rigid movement repetitions. By constantly changing movements a player can discover what works best for them while learning to perform the skill in a variety of ways.

🗣 I use no coaching instruction to correct technique, “errors” are actually encouraged!

📚 Note this not CLA but another useful tool basketball coaches can use especially in individual sessions. “In contrast to a nonlinear pedagogical approach, originally suggested by Davids, Shuttleworth and Chow (2005) and Chow et al. (2007), where key tasks constraints are manipulated in order ‘to facilitate the emergence of functional movement patterns and decision making behaviors‘, the differential learning approach does not identify key task constraints.” Schollhorn, W. I., Hegen, P., & Davids, K. (2012).

⛹️‍♂️It surprises me how common it is for tall players to be rigid movers within our sport. This is because traditional, pre-planned drills do not allow them to experience a range of movement solutions and become adaptive movers. Many clubs try to solve this with more basketball instead of thinking differently and incorporating other movement forms.

👣 Repetition without repetition can also be applied to athletic performance. My friend @_karamvirgill gave me some great advice to put players in positions where they can explore full cycles of breath. Rigid movement can sometimes be a result of holding the breath when players get outside of their movement bandwidth.

I’ve observed hundreds of work-outs and practices all over the 🌎, and something I feel is commonly missing is DECEPTION.

👀 While this is best cultivated playing against defense, even in an individual workout this can be emphasised. Great job by @kadenrei.d here showing different ways to be deceptive. This is critical for shooters in order to gain separation.

💡 This is one of many reasons I am so anti all the traditional blocked drills we see. Easy solutions are out there to improve variability and game transfer if coaches are willing to think a little bit differently!

🗣”Talk the Demo” is a teaching strategy I use based on dual-coding. This is where words are combined with visuals, a method shown to help people retrieve information and learn better (Weinstein & Sumeracki, 2019).

🔬Within linear-pedagogy, the coach attempts to teach technique-first, where supposed optimal techniques are learnt before the introduction of rules & game-play (Blomqvist et al., 2001). With a non-linear approach, players are immersed in game-play with appropriate task constraints. They develop technical skills while learning the relevant perceptual cues.

🌳 Within the demo, I am therefore cognisant of not prescribing a rigid solution but creating an environment where different solutions and techniques can emerge. Guided defense is one of many tools for doing this.

⚠️Coaches & players! Short post on the importance of variability and instant take-aways for when you practice shooting.

⛹️‍♂️Variability allows the performer to develop adjustability to specific variations in environmental conditions that will occur in competition. A problem occurs when most shooting practice is pre-determined and the shooter knows exactly what shot they will take.

📚”Variability encourages exploration of the perceptual-motor landscape so that a player can educate their attention to the specifying information and the system will be able to self-assemble coordination solutions” (Gray, 2021).

These are just a few of the many ways I create variability with my guys:

📍Shooter always in a new location
📐Passing angle always changed (lateral or behind shooter is critical). Most passes do not come from under basket, but this is what happens in traditional shooting drills.
🙆‍♂️ Contest in different places from varied angles.
⏰ Bursts concept, no wasted time from rotations. Replicates fatigue conditions present in the game.

🏀 While there are consistencies with the jump shot, no shot is ever the same. Coaches talk about and attempt to train players to use the exact same, “repeatable technique” but this is impossible.

📚Don’t take my word for it, check out the science. Over Christmas I read over 25 studies on shooting. Just some of the numerous constraints which effect the shooting motion are listed below. These need to be considered when designing practices, so coaches can move away from traditional 1 on 0 one hand form drills.

▪️ Distance from the basket (Elliott, 1992; Elliott & White, 1989; Miller & Bartlett, 1993)
▪️Presence of a defender (Rojas, Cepero, Ona, & Gutierrez, 2000)
▪️Body posture at ball release (Ripoll, Bard, & Paillard, 1986)
▪️Other movements completed by the player before shooting (Lorenzo & Arago ́n, 2003)
▪️Field of view (Oudejans, van de Langerberg, & Hutter, 2002; Ripoll et al., 1986)
▪️Physical characteristics of the player (Hudson, 1985b; Rojas et al., 2000)
